How is it made?
The Velocity uses hardened foam cores over a steel frame with a fibreglass skin. This makes it very light and strong. Indeed, the Velocity has a very good safety record, not just because of the canard which avoids ‘stall/spin’ accidents because it cannot stall, as the canard will automatically drop the nose before the main wing stalls, but also because of its strength, having suffered no inflight breakups in its history, even when it has exceeded the published ‘Never exceed speed’ (VNe).
Also, because the plane is made of foam core, it will float all day so a dinghy is not required when flying over water, unlike a conventional aluminium aircraft, which will eventually sink.
The SE will be fitted with a 180hp Continental ‘Titan’ engine, which, as a Lycoming ‘clone’, is already approved by the LAA. This engine provides the best combination of speed, economy and cost, although other engines will be considered in the future. In addition it will have the MT Constant Speed propeller, which is also already approved by the LAA, with an electric, rather than hydraulic actuator, because it is lighter and cheaper.
